01

Identify the caller and role

Record the adjuster’s name, company, contact information, claim number, and which person or policy the company represents. Do not assume the caller represents your interests.

02

Clarify the request

Ask what information or authorization is being requested, why it is needed, and whether the request can be provided in writing. Read releases and settlement documents before signing them.

03

Keep a contact log

For every call, message, or letter, record the date, participants, request, response, and any stated deadline. Save copies of what you provide and avoid guessing when you do not know an answer.

04

Know where oversight sits

Insurance is regulated primarily at the state level. Questions about claim handling or an insurer complaint can be directed to the relevant state insurance department; legal advice about a specific claim should come from a qualified lawyer.
