Confirm practice and location fit
Use a directory listing to build a research list, then ask each firm whether it currently handles the type of matter and jurisdiction involved. A firm name, category, or website cannot establish fit by itself.
Ask who would handle the matter
Find out who would be responsible for day-to-day communication and major decisions. Ask how updates are delivered, how questions are handled, and whether another lawyer or firm may participate.
Compare firms with the same questions
Use one written question list for every conversation. Consistent questions make it easier to compare answers about experience, process, communication, costs, and possible conflicts.
Read the agreement before deciding
The scope of work, fee basis, expenses, and client responsibilities should be clear in the written agreement. Ask for an explanation of any term you do not understand and keep a complete copy.
